Orthodontists complete a five-year degree in dentistry, and then continue stufying for a further three years in the field of orthodontics.

Othodontists and dentists should both play a part in your overall oral health, however their roles are very different.
Dentists cover a broad range of oral health issues, and complete procedures such as fillings and teeth whitening. An orthodontist, on the other hand, is a dental specialist that focuses on straightening teeth and aligning jaws.
You do not need a referral from a dentist before visiting an orthodontist, although your dentist may recommend visiting the orthodontist if they notice any orthodontic abnormalities.

If you notice any orthodontic problems in your own teeth or jaw, or in your childs, you can book an appointment without visiting a dentist first.
